Intro to Spar Making

Ever wondered how thatched roofs are held in place? Would you like to learn about the intrinsic link between ancient hazel coppices and thatching? Would you like to learn the basics of making thatching spars? If so, this course is for you.

•We’ll firstly look at selecting useable hazel and cutting them to lengths (known as ‘gads’).

•We’ll explore the the terminology used in spar making.

•Then we’ll split some gads, point them, and turn them into useable thatching spars

All materials and tools will be supplied, but do bring your own spar or hook or billhook if you have one. Also, please bring a pair of work gloves and a knee pad (if you have one).

The cost of the day is £50 per person. The day will start at 10.30 & finish around 3.30 in the afternoon.?
